SK hynix Makes Its Case for the Future of AI Memory

I was in the CES 2026 press room when SK hynix laid out its next-gen AI memory roadmap

Las Vegas always has noise, but the CES press rooms are different. They’re quieter, more technical, and the people in the seats are listening for one thing: what ships, what scales, and what changes procurement decisions six months from now. On January 6, 2026, SK hynix stepped up in that setting and made its message pretty clear — the next cycle of AI hardware is going to be memory-constrained, and they intend to be the company defining the memory stack.

The announcement centered on a dedicated customer exhibition hall at the Venetian Expo (January 6–9), with the theme “Innovative AI, Sustainable Tomorrow.” The phrase is marketing, sure — but the product list underneath it was not. They framed the whole show around AI-optimized memory, and they backed that up with a mix of high-bandwidth memory, low-power modules for servers, client-side DRAM, and a NAND story that’s directly aimed at AI data centers.

HBM4 was the headline in the room

The first thing everyone keyed in on was HBM. SK hynix said it is showing a next-generation HBM product described as a 16-high 48GB HBM4. They positioned it as the follow-on to the 12-high 36GB HBM4 they’ve already talked about, and they made a point of saying the work is being driven by customer requirements.

NAND Getting Cheaper At Year End

NAND memory and flash drives are usually hot in Oct through Dec, but this year it might be different.  It seems the price of flash is dropping according to Digitimes.  Apparently, growth of NAND Flash has been limited this year, especially amid lessened flash memory card and USB drive shipments.

This led to a veritable price ‘free fall’ during the second half of the ongoing year 2010, to the point where module makers are doing everything they can to not increase their inventories further. For those interested in numbers, 8 Gb MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips got 10-14% cheaper during early November. Likewise, the prices of 16 Gb and 64 Gb MLC products dropped more than 7% during the same period. The chip makers are thinking the drastic dip in price will stimulate demand.  What we are not taking into account is the up and coming TLC flash which is now getting more advanced controller support making the TLC technology more stable and cheaper to manufacturer. Surplus of NAND Flash Memory To Continue

DRAMeXchange published a market research paper stating that NAND flash memory will continue to flood the market at lower prices. NAND flash memory is primarily used for storing songs, photos and other data on gadget type devices like digital cameras, MP3 players and iPods. The biggest contributing factor on why the market will continue to see cheap NAND is lack of sales.

Since production forecasts run months ahead, the market has sitting inventory. To move this inventory prices are continueing to drop. For example, DRAMeXchange reported a drop of 20% in June for NAND memory related devices.
The NAND flash market has been so bad that the creator of the chips, SanDisk, on Monday reported a surprise loss of US$68 million for the second quarter. The company blamed the supply glut for its problems, pointing out that it sold a record amount of flash, 120 percent more than the same time last year, but that prices are down 55 percent compared to then.
SanDisk also reported the flash memory pricing might get worse [better for us] in the third quarter. So, it might be a good idea to start picking out your Christmas items now and make sure it’s some type of flash gadget. On the flip side, with today’s surplus means these companies are cutting back production as well, so once this flood dries up, we could see a shortage for NAND and prices jumping up…and the cycle goes on.
