The World’s Largest Capacity USB Flash Drive

Kingston Technology announced last week that it is shipping the world’s largest capacity USB drive from the DataTraveler product line. Their Ultimate GT offers up to 2TB of storage along with USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) performance.

Tech enthusiasts and professional users with high-capacity storage needs now have the ability to store immense amounts of data in a portable form factor, with use cases such as carrying up to 70 hours of 4K video directly on the drive.

Representatives from Kingston stated, “We are always striving to create new and better storage solutions to meet our customers’ needs, especially in an ever-increasing digital world.”

With the release of the DataTraveler Ultimate GT, users could push the boundaries of portable storage and ensure they had more than enough space for video, photos, backups, and large media collections in one of the smallest storage formats available at the time.

The DataTraveler Ultimate GT was released in both 1TB and 2TB capacities and backed by a 5-year warranty along with free technical support.

Update

While the 2TB Kingston drive was groundbreaking in 2017, the USB storage market has continued evolving rapidly. Today, the largest commercially available USB flash drives have reached capacities of 4TB, with several manufacturers now offering portable solid-state USB devices exceeding 8TB and even 16TB when using SSD-based architectures. True flash-drive-style thumb drives remain more limited because of heat, power consumption, NAND density, and controller constraints inside the tiny enclosure.

Another major shift since this article was first published is the widespread adoption of USB-C and USB 3.2 / USB4 connectivity. Modern high-capacity USB storage devices are no longer judged only by size, but also by sustained write performance, thermal stability, and compatibility with high-resolution video workflows. As NAND flash technology continues improving, the idea of carrying multiple terabytes in your pocket has become surprisingly normal compared to the shock value of a 2TB flash drive back in 2017.
